Hypothermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy (HIPEC)

We are the first private center in Costa Rica with HIPEC equipment, a treatment that has demonstrated greater effectiveness against certain types of cancer.

The "Centro Integral de Oncología" - CIO offers treatment with this innovative HIPEC equipment, which allows for the treatment of certain types of cancer, obtaining very good results in the majority of patients.

But, what is chemotherapy?

Chemotherapy involves the use of drugs to destroy cancer cells. There are different types of chemotherapy, which are applied depending on the type of cancer and how much it has spread in the body. In most cases, the goal is to destroy all the cancer and prevent it from coming back. If this is not possible, chemotherapy can slow the return of cancer, improving the patient's quality of life.

How does HIPEC work?

Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy (HIPEC) is a treatment for some types of cancer that have spread to the lining of the abdominal cavity, such as ovarian cancer, appendix cancer, colon cancer, stomach cancer, or abdominal mesothelioma. Unlike regular chemotherapy treatments that are administered intravenously and circulate through the bloodstream, this treatment is performed during cancer surgery. The chemotherapy is heated and placed directly into the abdomen. Once the chemotherapy bathes the lining of the abdomen to come into direct contact with any cancer cells for a period of time, usually between 60 and 90 minutes, the chemotherapy solution is removed from the abdomen, and the procedure is completed.

Who are candidates for the application of the procedure?

Depending on your type of cancer, there are different criteria to be a candidate for an HIPEC procedure. In general, if cancer affects the lining of the abdominal cavity, you may be a candidate for this procedure. Additionally, since surgery is performed to remove all the tumor that can be seen with the naked eye (called volume reduction) before the HIPEC procedure, your surgeon must determine if they can do so. Only patients in whom your surgeon believes they could remove all or most of their tumor are candidates for this procedure.

Which cancers can be treated with HIPEC?

  • Abdominal Mesothelioma
  • Appendiceal Cancers
  • Colorectal Cancers
  • Gastrointestinal Cancers
  • Ovarian Cancer
  • Soft Tissue Sarcomas

In the "Centro Integral de Oncología" our medical team is more than willing to address your queries or concerns regarding the HIPEC treatment.
