Revolutionary Advances in Cancer Treatment: A Ray of Hope for Carcinomatosis Patients

San José, November 17, 2023. Symposium

At an event that has marked a milestone in the fight against cancer, the Comprehensive Oncology Center (CIO) successfully held the event 'Advancing in the Treatment of Carcinomatosis: New Perspectives in Ovarian and Colon Cancer.' This symposium, held on November 16 at the AC Marriott Escazú Hotel, brought together more than 50 healthcare professionals and prominent medical specialists who shared valuable insights into the innovative approach to a disease historically considered incurable.

Among the distinguished experts were Dr. Zenen Zeledón M., Medical Oncologist from CIO; Dr. Guillermo Flores Ayala, Surgical Oncologist from the Jalisco Cancer Institute in Guadalajara, Mexico; and Dr. Jesús Esquivel, MD - FACS Surgical Oncologist from Beebe Healthcare in Lewes, Delaware, United States. During their presentations, the doctors highlighted advances in the treatment of carcinomatosis using Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy (HIPEC), a devastating condition that has challenged traditional expectations.

Dr. Flores Ayala shared details about this innovative technique developed by Dr. Sugarbaker, which involves a complex surgical procedure followed by high-temperature chemotherapy. 'We have seen an encouraging response to this treatment, doubling the cure rate for patients and significantly extending their life expectancy,' stated Dr. Flores Ayala. This breakthrough represents a paradigm shift in the perception of the disease and provides a new ray of hope for those facing carcinomatosis.

Dr. Efraín Cambronero, a founding member of CIO, emphasized the importance of continuous medical education. 'As a project, celebrating two years of existence, our main commitment is ongoing training. We are organizing workshops and symposiums to educate national doctors, especially oncologists and young specialists, with the hope of positively impacting the oncological outcomes of our patients,' stated Dr. Cambronero.

Dr. Flores Ayala also emphasized the need for a multidisciplinary approach in cancer treatment, recognizing the essential work of professionals from various fields. "Our role as doctors is to reach out to the patient and walk together in this journey. None of this is possible without the work of a multidisciplinary team", he underscored.

With an eye on the future, CIO aims to continue these types of training sessions until 2024, solidifying its commitment to comprehensive and innovative care to improve the health of cancer patients.
